That article is flawed. Firstly, if someone is renting privately, they are claiming benefits. When they build social homes, they will moving into their social rented home and still be claiming benefits. Where is the saving?. Furthermore, the housing association and councils will be asking for Government for money to build these homes, which will run into billions.
There is a lot wrong with the housing market. For instance, you have people who are earning £100,000 and still paying peanuts for the council rents. Whilst the low paid on £13k are paying market rents.
We need to end Right to Buy. We need to end Help to Buy, unless the property can be sold off at a discount to the next generation.
The system incentivises people to be poor, take up low paid and have children, to get social housing. People pretending to be single mothers, when they are in an active relationship.
If the Government builds homes, then they need to spend billions to maintain them. There is no free lunch.
In my opinion, it is better if they find ways to restrict house prices going, faster then incomes. With the objectives of people buying their own home under their own steam. Those army of council staff and repair dont’ work for free.
